Classes use hands-on, engaging methods to provide dynamic effective training that goes beyond meeting compliance requirements and addresses the skills and behaviors needed to make participants safer, your safety program more successful, and your company more profitable.
A four hour course that satisfies initial Part 46 MSHA requirements for newly hired miners. Allows participant to work on a mine site under the direct supervision of a trained miner.
Before the new miner begins work MSHA requires that no less than four hours of training be provided on specific subjects. Our New Miner Intro course covers most of those subjects. This list describes what is covered in the class. [Bracketed subjects must be covered by the company as additional training and are not covered specifically enough to fulfill requirements.]
Introduction to the work environment
General mining methods and operations are reviewed through reviews of fatalities and discussion of mining methods. A basic understanding of MSHA is also reviewed as well as a basic understanding of training requirements. [Since the new miner will not necessarily be performing tasks in a mine where the training is conducted, they should receive a walkaround tour of the mine they report to either as additional training toward the 24-hour requirement or as part of site specific hazard training.]- Recognition and avoidance of electrical and other hazards present at the mine
Through examinations of fatalities, discussion, and interactive activities, we help the participant recognize hazards of traffic patterns and control, mobile equipment, and loose or unstable ground conditions and what steps must be taken to avoid them. - Review of emergency medical procedures, escape, evacuation, and firefighting
General steps that should be taken in the event of an emergency including medical and firefighting procedures are covered. We also include procedures that must be in place in advance of an emergency so everyone is better prepared, like inspection of fire extinguishers, etc. - Instruction on health and safety aspects of tasks assigned
We cover a broad spectrum of physical and health hazards and the protective measures a miner can take. Hazcom and the usefulness of Material Safety Data Sheets are covered with a dramatic demonstration. The effects of noise and dust are covered along with the appropriate personal protective equipment that should be used. [Any additional task-specific training should be provided as part of the remainder of training required or any new task training.] - Statutory rights of miners
We discuss the legal requirement that companies provide safe workplaces along with the protection offered to all workers who refuse to work in unsafe conditions as well as the responsibility of each miner to be an active part of his own safety as well as those around him. - Line of authority of supervisors
General examples continue with the statutory rights about how miners should be able to report unsafe situations and the role of miners representatives. An introduction is also provided to help the new miner understand the authority of MSHA, what is involved in a routine MSHA inspection including the citation and fine process. [The specific chain of command for the new miner's company should be covered in additional training or naturally as part of the new employee's indoctrination.] - Introduction to rules and procedures for reporting hazards
Explanation is offered for situations where written reports are required for equipment or workplaces and other ways that hazards should be reported. Procedures for requesting inspections from MSHA in serious situations are covered. [Again, additional, company-specific procedures must be covered in additional training or as part of the new employee's indoctrination.]
Once the introduction is completed, the new miner may work where an experienced miner can observe that they are performing their work in a safe and healthful manner. Please ask us about additional requirements. We can help with those also.
